Doping Control – What to Expect at Tournaments
Testing can happen at any FIDE event. If you’re selected, a Doping Control Officer or chaperone will approach you, show identification, and inform you. From that moment, please remain within sight of the DCO. You’ll be escorted to a private doping control room where staff will explain the process, answer questions, and have you complete a brief questionnaire before sample collection. You’ll choose sealed collection equipment yourself and can check that all seals are intact.
You’ll then provide a urine sample in private facilities under observation, as required by the rules. If the first attempt is not enough volume, a partial sample will be sealed and you’ll try again until the required amount is reached. The sample is divided into A and B bottles, which you seal and verify against the form. You’ll declare any medications or supplements (and any TUE, if applicable), review the paperwork, add comments if needed, and receive a copy. Afterwards, samples are sent to a WADA-accredited laboratory; if anything requires follow-up, FIDE will contact you with the next steps.
